Historians believe that John Quincy Adams was the smartest US President. In a 2006 study by the US-based International Society of Political Psychology, researchers used a statistical algorithm to analyse the works, biographies, policies, speeches and other resources of every American president. They found that Adams had the highest “intellectual brilliance”, with an estimated intelligence quotient (IQ) of 165-175. He was followed by Thomas Jefferson, John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton and Woodrow Wilson.
But even though Adams was elected to the position, he won the presidency without winning the popular vote, in a situation that was similar to George W. Bush and Donald Trump.
In a country as large and diverse as the US, it’s not surprising to find a disparity in public opinion. In fact, there has been only one unanimous electoral victory in the US – George Washington was the only president who received all the electoral votes in both his 1788 and 1792 elections.
Another president who was popular enough to receive majority votes each time he stood for elections, was Franklin D. Roosevelt – America’s war-time leader. He won four elections, from 1932 to 1944. When he died of a stroke in April 1945, just a few months after he began his final term, Vice President Harry Truman took on the mantle of overseeing the end of the Second World War. Then, in 1947, the US Congress passed the 22nd Amendment, which capped future presidents’ terms to a maximum of two.
Roosevelt was also the first US President to appear on television. Before 1939, US leaders used more traditional media, like newspapers and radio, to get their messages across to the public. But when Roosevelt appeared in a TV broadcast from the 1939 World’s Fair, it marked the beginning of a much more media-savvy presidency.
