Municipal IQ warns of spike in protests ahead of general elections

Gauteng is the prominent site for service delivery protests, according to Municipal IQ.

Despite the Northern Cape’s several protests over the years, Gauteng has always been the dominant province when it comes to service delivery protests.

Karen Heese from Municipal IQ says there are a number of factors contributing to service delivery protests in Gauteng.

Gauteng is very densely populated. There are a lot of people in Gauteng.

We see flare-ups in the same places. Often they are places that are attractive and accessible to employment.

Heese says there is a decline during the local municipal election compared with general elections.

We always see a spike before general elections which is quite interesting. I think because campaign messaging is quite broad, it raises expectations.

There have been service delivery protests in Tshwane, Khayelitsha, Beekersdal and Vanderbijlpark.
